Department of Life Science at College of Education/ AL-Iraqia University organized on Thursday 14/4/2016 a scientific symposium titled "Are you infected by virus Zika" and head of the department mentioned above doctor Zina Ghazi Faisal and teaching staff members doctor Saad Salih and doctor Ahmed Sattar AL-Wazeer gave lectures.
The symposium was divided into three parts, they are as follows: General perspective about the virus and its impact upon human being and its most important types, the classification of Zika virus and its history of appearance and the host and its spread, danger and means of prevention.
Besides, the symposium shedded lights on viruses because they are considered to be the most significant obstacle that witness the taxonomy and they are not classified as living beings therefore they are mostly described as contagious particles however, they have some features of living ones such as the ability to be doubled by the employment of host cells that has been taken.
Viruses resort to living cells mechanisms through adding of viral DNA or RNA into the genetic material of living cells.
The lecturers highlighted the relation between viruses and cancer basing on the fact that viruses cause human cancers and it includes some genetic types fromthe human papilloma virus, and the virus hepatitis B, a virus and hepatitis C infection, and the virus Epstein-Bar, and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus.
They pointed out that the recently discovered carcinogenic viruses in humans are as follows: virus Altorama (virus cell Merkel Altorama) that most cases of causing form rare skin cancer called Merkel cell carcinoma, and virus Zika, Which belongs to the Flaviviruses and has a taxonomic link dengue fever, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile virus, which belongs to a virus called (Arbovirus group) is a term used to refer to a group of viruses that are transmitted by arthropod vectors.
Moreover, the virus has one thread of RNA as an active genetic material. It is consisting of 10794 of the nucleotides that symbolize 3419 amino acids. And the virus has been isolated for the first time in April 1947 from monkeys Rh macaques that had been placed in cagein the Zika forest in Uganda near Lake Victoria by scientists from the Yellow fever Research Institute, whereas the second isolation of the mosquito Aedesafricanus in the same location in January 1948, when the fever was developed among monkeys, researchers isolated the viral factor from blood vaccine which has been described for the first time as Zika Virus in 1952.
As for Virus Zika transmission, the lecturers mentioned that it is mainly transmitted by mosquito bites (Aedes) and several types of this mosquito are able to transmit the virus mentioned above and other viruses as well such as: yellow fever, dengue fever viruses and chikungunya. Furthermore, mosquitoes are infected by feeding on the host blood.
Then, Zika virus remains in the blood of the infected one for one week and the mosquito will be infected during that period.
